ReadingPals

About ReadingPals

Carol and Barney Barnett, along with United Way Worldwide, The Children’s Movement of Florida, and NobleHour identified 10 United Ways across Florida in an effort to develop an initiative focused early childhood literary. The program will focus on engaging, training and developing literacy volunteers, called ReadingPals, to increase the number of students who are reading at grade level by the end of their third grade year.

"We so strongly believe that the future of our state rests in the hands and minds of our youngest that we have personally contributed to the launching of "ReadingPals" -- an early literacy initiative in ten Florida regions. Our goal is to ensure that more children are reading at grade level by the end of third grade." - Carol Barnett

When will this initiative begin?

Volusia County - The first year of implementation will be in the fall of 2012 in prekindergarten and Head Start classes.

Flagler County - Flagler County Schools will start working with this initiative in the fall of 2012 in the Voluntary Prekindergarten Extended Day Program.

Each volunteer will be required to sign a commitment form stating that they will volunteer for a minimum of 25 hours of student contact per child.
