About ReadingPalsCarol and Barney Barnett, along with United Way Worldwide, The Children’s Movement of Florida, and NobleHour identified 10 United Ways across Florida in an effort to develop an initiative focused early childhood literary. The program will focus on engaging, training and developing literacy volunteers, called ReadingPals, to increase the number of students who are reading at grade level by the end of their third grade year.
When will this initiative begin?Volusia County - The first year of implementation will be in the fall of 2012 in prekindergarten and Head Start classes. Flagler County - Flagler County Schools will start working with this initiative in the fall of 2012 in the Voluntary Prekindergarten Extended Day Program. How to Become a ReadingPal!The first step to becoming a ReadingPal is to Sign-Up!
Volunteer Training: both Volusia and Flagler Counties will be using the Skills-based Educational Experiences Delivery System (SEEDS) curriculum. Each volunteer will be required to attend the two-day curriculum training session. Each volunteer will also be required to meet all Volusia and Flagler County School volunteer requirements. Each volunteer will be required to sign a commitment form stating that they will volunteer for a minimum of 25 hours of student contact per child. Once trained, each volunteer will be required to work with up to 3 students two times a week for 30 minutes. Each of these 30 minute sessions will include the volunteer reading a book out loud, a literacy activity related to the book, and a volunteer-child conversation about the book.
