Make A Difference Day 2007
 Saturday, October 27, 2007

What is Make A Difference Day?

Known as the “national day of doing good” Make A Difference Day is a national effort designed to mobilize citizens in communities across the country in volunteer service—Neighbors helping Neighbors. Sponsored nationally by USA Weekend and the Points of Light Foundation, this is the 17th Annual Make A Difference Day. More than 8,000 people, young and old, committed to spend Saturday, October 27th making a difference through service projects in Volusia and Flagler Counties.

Another Record Breaking Year!

2007 proved to be yet another record-breaking year for Make A Difference Day efforts in Volusia and Flagler Counties, Florida. The enthusiasm and outpouring of generosity and dedication continues to grow, even in these extremely difficult economic times with a slow-down in the local housing markets and increased fuel prices.

The Volunteer Center of the United Way of Volusia and Flagler Counties again acted as a convener and promoter for local Make A Difference Day projects. Over 40 agencies submitted projects, and well over 8,000 volunteers completed over 60 projects for Make A Difference Day.  Due to inclement weather a handful of projects were rescheduled. Based on agency reports, the 2007 Make A Difference Day projects have collected funds or supplies for participating agencies and their clients or saved the agencies well over $300,000. While we once again saw many familiar faces, we also encouraged the participation of a number of new volunteer organizations and corporate partners.

How many people were helped by Make a Difference Day projects:

As in year’s past, this question poses a challenge because of the scope of each individual project. Based on agency reports collected through today, over 67,000 residents of Volusia and Flagler Counties have been assisted or touched through Make A Difference Day projects. In addition to serving the community through this one-day event, many agencies have found potential long-term volunteers, possibly board members too! The impact of Make A Difference Day is truly long-term.

Some of the responses to this question which we’ve received from the participating non-profit agencies also included:

·        Young Mothers and babies that are in Children's Home Society’s care. Foster parents that need help providing the little things to the children in their trust. How many changes each and every day. When the donations were delivered on October 27th, I was there to thank each of the volunteers and give them a brief presentation on Who the Children’s Home Society is and what services to children CHS provides. So many said they were not aware that Children's Home Society provided so many services. We have 6 ladies that would like to volunteer, one that would like more information about becoming a foster parent and one that would like information about joining CHS Board. Each group took our Holiday Wish List so I feel very sure these new partnerships will continue.

·         Next, the library will do some marketing amongst these one-time volunteers to become full time volunteers.  Many did express a desire to volunteer on a regular basis.  One group said this type of work was what they wanted for service projects in the Spring and Fall and would volunteer those times for sure.

·        The groups participating have asked to be involved in other volunteering opportunities with our agency and thus the goodness grows.

·        Several people asked if we needed volunteers to work with our people; to assist us and to give them experience in the field.

·        Bank of America offered to conduct another food drive when requested… and will remain committed to Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida’s Volusia Branch.
