Make It “A Day On-Not A Day Off”-The King Day of Service, January 21, 2008

We have all heard his famous speech. We all know Dr. King had a dream of equality. To commemorate the vision and teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., community volunteers in Volusia and Flagler Counties will celebrate Martin Luther King Day with a “day on, not a day off,” on Monday, January 15th. The Volunteer Center of the United Way of Volusia-Flagler Counties has joined forces with Flagler, Halifax and Southeast Volusia Habitat for Humanity affiliates and PACE Center for Girls in Ormond Beach to host “The King Day of Service-Building on the Dream.”

In 1994, Congress passed the King Holiday and Service Act, directing the King Center and the Corporation for National and Community Service to carry out a day of service reflecting Dr. King's life and teachings.

“Everyone can be great because anyone can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t even have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve...You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.”
