CHILDREN’S ADVOCACY CENTER

Project Description:  Landscaping the courtyard of new facility.

Volunteers:

The Home Depot #0233 Daytona Beach-12-14 Volunteers

Outcomes: More than you can imagine!  Home Depot came in with lots of plants which they planted.  They pulled all the weeds and put new mulch and river rock down in the beds.  They cleaned and stained a wooden bench and built a shade trellis.  –Pamela Hobbs, CAC

Who benefitted from the project: Nearly 3,000 clients per year at varying locations from Volusia and Flagler Counties.  This specific area will be utilized by approximately 1500-1800 individuals per year. They have a beautiful place to be able to sit outside for counseling sessions and to wait to be seen for their appointments.  Secondly, staff.  It is a beautiful place to watch our plants grow, bloom and just relax.

Who benefitted from the project:  The 8 residents of Brian’s House.

Comments from Participants:

The project’s most enjoyable aspect was talking to the residents and actually being thanked directly by these teenagers. They immediately jumped in to assist with a ‘smile.’”- Claudio Vidal, Deltona Strivers 4-H Club

EASTER SEALS

Project Description:  Outdoor maintenance of two playgrounds includes cleaning play equipment, weeding garden areas, and planting garden or preparing garden for children to plant flowers.

Volunteers:

Home Depot of Orange City-8 Volunteers

Outcomes: The goal was accomplished and exceeded our expectations.  The project would have cost hundreds of dollars in materials alone, not to mention the labor necessary for the job. Not only did Home Depot provide the tools and the labor, they also supplied flowers and plants to fill the gardens, mulch, soil, fertilizer, wood, nails, rakes, a birdfeeder, bird seed and ant killer.

Who benefitted from the project:  All of the children that attend Easter Seals of Deland benefited from this project.  They now have a second outdoor area they can enjoy on a daily basis.  64 children will have access to this garden area.

Comments from Participants:

“Long term this preschool garden will be part of the children’s every day curriculum.  Children will be able to learn about nature, how to care and respect the flowers, view butterflies and birds and experience the overall beauty of the outdoors.  The benefit of this area and how it can expand everyday learning is without limits.” – Krista Barringer, Principal, Easter Seals Charter School

FAMILY RENEW COMMUNITY

Project Description:  Renovation of case manager’s offices and resident meeting space at our DeLand Campus.  Painting walls, paint moldings, cleaning and rearranging furniture.

Volunteers:

We had five fantastic Deltona 4-H students, two Deltona 4-H leaders, one FRC Board Member, our DeLand Case Manager and our Executive Director.

Outcomes: We painted the meeting room/reception area a beautiful cream color and created accent trim in a darker tan.  The room is approximately 16’ x 20’ with high ceilings.  The immediate impact is the feeling of openness is this much brighter room.  This building was donated to FRC in 2001 and the offices haven’t had any work done since then – we always concentrate on keeping our apartments upgraded for the families and usually leave our offices last.  The long term impact is that this room will remain a bright, cheerful place for the families to have their mandatory monthly community meeting and a place to have their weekly case management meeting with room for the children to play games or do homework.

Who benefitted from the project:  Those who benefited are the Case Manager, our volunteer receptionist, our resident families and of course all those who visit the office to either inquire about the program or apply to the program for housing.  We have seven families (seven adults and 15 children).

Comments from Participants:

“All of the volunteers benefited from this project because we were all there to serve the agency’s needed. What I can do next is to continue to get others involved and spreading out the word that there is so much help that is needed in the communities.” – Evelyn J. Vidal, Deltona Strivers 4-H Club

THE HOUSE NEXT DOOR

Project Description:  As a piece of the current process of refurbishing our counseling center volunteers were asked to help deep-clean the historical home in which the agency is housed.  Wash base boards, window seals, dust cob webs, help organize some materials.

Volunteers:

Coggin DeLand Ford, Lincoln, Mercury-3 volunteers.

Outcomes: Stairs, entrance, hallway and group discussion room were all cleaned and dusted in order for the facility to be painted at a later date.

Who benefitted from the project:  The staff and clients of The House Next Door. Alpha Program – 110 families.  Making Changes Program – 70 families.   Family Coach Program – 50 families.  Kinship Care Program – 120 families.  Clinical Therapy Program – 308 families.    For a total of 658 families from Volusia and Flagler Counties.

Comments from Participants:

“We feel we helped in assuring a clean and happy environment for those who provide and receive the programs available at The House Next Door in Deland due to the fact that the organization is non-profit and the size of the facility, it is hard to find the help needed to keep up on everyday housework, we were glad to help! Knowing that those in need have such a great place to come for help within the community. The historic home that The House Next Door uses is beautiful and definately demands a lot of upkeep.”
