RESULTS MATTER
When you give to United Way, you can be sure that results
that improve people’s lives are being achieved in more than 85 programs at our
45 partner agencies. In Volusia and Flagler Counties, over
200,000 individuals are
assisted by United Way partner agencies each year. That’s almost 1 in 3 of every
family member, friend, or neighbor in our local community!
In 2006, residents’ lives were improved in five primary areas in the
following ways…
Creating a Brighter Future for Our Children & Youth
- 6,130 at-risk
infants and preschoolers were given quality childcare through Child Care
Resource Network/Early Learning Coalition of Flagler & Volusia.
- 5,400 students started school with necessary school supplies through
The Jewish Federation of Volusia-Flagler.
- 4,249 boys and 2,646 girls were given the opportunity to participate in
scouting programs through the three councils in our community: Boy Scouts of
Central Florida, Girl Scouts of Citrus Council, and Girl Scouts of Gateway
Council.
- Over 22,000 underprivileged children were able to participate in
after-school programs and other recreational activities that promoted physical
fitness, sportsmanship and self–esteem, all while keeping children in a safe and
healthy environment through agencies like the Boys & Girls Club, Flagler
Summer Camp, YMCA, Police Athletic Leagues, Rose Marie Bryon Children’s Center,
and others.
Building Stronger Families &
Neighborhoods
61,410 people were given emergency
assistance, in the form of food, shelter, travel, and more through numerous
agencies, including The Neighborhood Center, Halifax Urban Ministries,
Catholic Charities, Jewish Federation, Salvation Army, Flagler Area Ministerial
Association, and others.
726 individuals received legal aid and financial counseling through
Community Legal Services and Consumer Credit Counseling.
1,059 adults and family teams were tutored in reading through the
Volusia Literacy Council.
8,919 children and adults were supported by programs through the
Children’s Advocacy Center, Family Life Center, and the Domestic Abuse Council
to deal with family violence and abuse.
2,636 youth and families were provided counseling, intervention, and
other support and outreach services needed to strengthen their lives through
United Way partners such as Children’s Home Society, PACE Center for Girls,
Catholic Charities, House Next Door, and St. Gerard Campus.
Creating Independence for Elderly & Creating Independence for Adults with
Disabilities
3,135 elders in
our community were assisted through the Council on Aging.
1,805 elders were provided the opportunity to remain active in our
community through the Retired & Senior Volunteer Programs of Council on Aging
and Flagler Volunteer Services.
847 individuals with physical disabilities, including hearing and sight,
were assisted in order to continue to function independently through agencies
such as Easter Seals of Volusia-Flagler and Center for the Visually Impaired.
314 disabled adults received employment training and independent living
skills through programs at ARC of Volusia and UCP East Central Florida/WORC.
Responding to Community Disaster
11,625 individuals in our community
were prepared to face and/or assisted in time of disaster through the services
at American Red Cross.
Over 1,000 concerned residents were referred to volunteer opportunities
and donation sites through United Way’s Volunteer Center and 211/First Call
for Help to assist in the 2006 Christmas and 2007 Groundhog Day tornado
relief efforts.
Promoting Wellness & Protecting Our Health
4,827 teenagers
and adults were educated on HIV/STD prevention through Outreach Community
Care Network.
726 individuals worked to overcome substance abuse through programs at
Community Outreach Services and Stewart-Marchman Center.
6,431 individuals with mental health concerns were supported by efforts
at Mental Health Association.
