United Way gets chamber honor

DAYTONA BEACH -- The United Way of Volusia-Flagler Counties was selected as the 2008 Enterprise Award winner by The Chamber, Daytona Beach/Halifax Area.

The Enterprise Award is given "to an individual or organization that has made significant contributions to the quality, vitality and growth of our community," said Ed Williams, chamber chairman and sales manager for Coca-Cola in Daytona Beach.

Williams presided over the chamber's annual meeting and awards dinner Wednesday as the outgoing chairman. He handed over the gavel to Ted Serbousek, vice president of Jon Hall Automotive Group, the 2008 chamber chairman.

The dinner, the chamber's 88th, was at the Hilton Daytona Beach Oceanfront Resort. Chamber officials said the dinner, with a capacity for 1,200 people, was sold out.

Bishop Derek Triplett, pastor of Hope Fellowship Church in Daytona Beach, was honored with the chamber's Marvin Samuels Award. The award goes each year to a member of the chamber's Leadership Council who has "made a distinct difference in the organizations with which they have served," said Skip Stamper, president of the Leadership Council and award presenter.

In addition to his duties as pastor, Triplett is bishop of the Ninth Diocese of the United Covenant Churches of Christ and director of youth and young adult ministries.

He also is a member of the Daytona Beach Visioning Steering Committee, which is seeking to develop a long-range development plan for the city.

Lesa France Kennedy, president of International Speedway Corp., received the Lou Fuchs Award. The award is named for a champion of the local tourism industry who organized an effort to prevent weekend closings of gas stations during the oil embargo of the 1970s.

Kennedy, daughter of the late William C. France, also is a board member of NASCAR, which is owned by her family.
